Developer ordered to stop earthworks around school
BUTTERWORTH: The developer who was ordered to halt demolition of the 60-year-old SJK(C) Sin Chung building was issued a second order yesterday – this time by the Seberang Prai municipal council to stop earthworks around the school area.
Council president Md Aris Ariffin said Motif Era Sdn Bhd had failed to comply with the council’s earthworks plans.
“The developer dug up trenches to construct drains behind the school building without informing us. They also failed to put up hoardings around the trenches for public safety,” he added.

Earlier on the same day, the Butterworth Sessions Court dismissed the school’s application to seek non-enforcement of a March 25, 2003 order that it surrender the school property to landowner Motif Era.
Motif Era managing director M. Rajen said he would abide by the council’s directive and put up the hoardings.
At the school, Year Three pupil Mohd Nazran Yahaya said he had a nightmare on Thursday night after he and his friends were escorted out of their classrooms on the day when excavators flattened their canteen and toilet.
“I dreamt that the excavators were coming for our classrooms,” he said.
His cousin Mohd Faizul Ahmad, eight, said he was terrified when he saw the excavators demolishing the canteen.
Headmistress Sze Too Yu Ching said arrangements were being made for all the pupils to be relocated to SJK (C) Aik Keow in Penaga, about 7km away from Sin Chung.
“We may use the Aik Keow premises to conduct afternoon classes instead of the present morning classes,” she said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon appealed to the public not to view the demolition from a racial or ethnic angle.
“The state government strongly condemns the rough and hasty behaviour of the developer in tearing down part of the school building on Thursday,” he said.
He also urged the school to expedite construction of its new building, noting that the Government would allocate RM300,000 for the project.
