100 Thai Muslim teachers held
MORE than 100 religious teachers in southern Thailand have been detained since the bloody incident in Tak Bai, according to Utusan Malaysia.
Mohd Zain Daud, a religious teacher, was quoted as saying that since October last year, the teachers had become the targets of arrests by the authorities.
“Things became worse since the introduction of the Emergency Act and more than 100 religious teachers were arrested and questioned over offences which they claimed they did not commit,” said Mohd Zain, from Pattani.

“In the eyes of the authorities, religious teachers must be detained to prevent them from influencing Muslims from demanding their rights,” he added.
He said the Muslim community’s anger towards the Thai Government heightened after an imam was shot dead in Sungai Padi recently.
This strengthened their belief that the authorities were trying to wipe out religious groups in southern Thailand, he added.
Mohd Zain said the problem in southern Thailand would not be solved as long as the authorities perceived religious teachers as their enemies.
Meanwhile, Maya Karin was named Best Actress at the Estepona International Horror and Fantasy Film Festival in Malaga, Spain, recently.
According to Berita Harian, the actress won the award for her role in Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam 2.
The movie also bagged the Best Cinematography award.
This is the second Best Actress award for Maya.
She won the first through Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in Fukuoka, Japan, last year.
