Most unaware of latest Negaraku beat

KUALA LUMPUR: Most Malaysians are still unaware that the fast march beat of the national anthem had been changed to a slower tempo, said Information Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir.

The change was approved by the Cabinet and the Information Ministry had informed the public about it, he said yesterday, when commenting on a lack of uniformity in the Negaraku beat.

He noted that both the fast march beat and slower tempo versions had been played variously at events.

The fast march beat was introduced in 1992 while the current tempo, arranged by composer Datuk Wah Idris, was first heard by the public during the 2003 National Day celebrations.

Earlier, Abdul Kadir attended a meeting with heads of religious bodies on the Merdeka celebrations.

He said nine religious ceremonies would be held ahead of National Day on Aug 31 to pray for the country’s well-being.

RTM, he said, would broadcast live special prayers from the National Mosque this Friday.

On the same day, the Hindus will hold a ceremony at the Sri Kandasamy temple in Jalan Scott.

A Buddhist ceremony will be held at the Maha Vihara in Brickfields on Saturday at 8am, while a Bahai function will be held in Wisma Tun Sambanthan at 4pm.

On Sunday, a special mass will be celebrated at St Mary's Cathedral here.

On the same day, an Evangelical Christian programme will be held at the PGRM Hall in Jalan Pudu, while a Taoist ceremony will be conducted at the Chee Choy Kong temple in Kampung Selayang Baru, and a Sikh ceremony at the Klang Gurdwara. – Bernama
