Government offices to use less air-con starting today

Dr Fong: ‘Ultimately, Malaysia cannot escape the high-cost energy environment.’ |
“All air-conditioned offices will be required to turn up their temperature a little bit to consume less energy as part of the process to reduce costs,” said Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn.
The directive, however, is only applicable to the public sector.
It was up to private companies to follow the Government’s lead, he told reporters after launching a career carnival at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman here yesterday.
Dr Fong said the Government was looking at a comprehensive energy-saving environment to ensure less use of energy in future.
It would include improving the public transport system to discourage commuters from using their own cars, he said.
“These are some of the strategies the Government is studying.
“Ultimately, Malaysia cannot escape the high-cost energy environment. The crude oil price is more than US$60 (RM225) per barrel and is expected to continue to rise.
“By 2009 Malaysia may become a net importer of oil and we have to gear ourselves to meet this development and adapt to the environment,” he said.
On the career carnival, Dr Fong said the last four organised by the Labour Department since October had helped some 10,000 people find employment. – Bernama
