Gurney Drive assault victim dies in hospital

PENANG: Teenager Asrin Mohsin who was in a coma after he was assaulted by at least 10 youths in Gurney Drive on Saturday died at the Penang Hospital yesterday.

Asrin, 18, drew his last breath about 4am. His parents Mohsin Hassan, 61, and Rokiah Noor, 57, and five elder sisters were by his side when he passed away.

He was buried at the Jelutong Muslim cemetery before zohor prayers at 1.40pm.

More than 500 people comprising family members, relatives and friends turned out for the funeral.

Earlier, Asrin’s mother fainted at the Medan Tunku flats multipurpose hall where his body was laid before being taken to the burial ground.

Mohsin, a retired hospital attendant, said he could never forgive the youths who killed his son.

He said: “It pains me to look at my son’s battered body.”

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Christopher Wan, who offered his condolences to Asrin’s family at the hospital, said three students aged between 16 and 17, and a 22-year-old youth had been arrested.

Meanwhile, State CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said Asrin’s attackers were either high on drugs or drunk when they set on him, because their walk was unsteady and their speech slurred.

SAC Syed Ismail said police were looking for Shaik Mohd Fadzil Shaik Abdullah, 20, Abdul Aziz Abdul Halim, 19, Mohd Faizal Mohd Noor, 19, and Mohd Faizal Anuar, 21 – all of Jalan Tanjong Tokong – to help in investigations.
