Bad news fails to deter loyal dim sum lovers
BY SYLVIA LOOIPENANG: Dim sum may be bad for health, according to reports, but coffeeshops and restaurants selling the bite-sized nibbles here are still drawing hordes of customers.
Yeap Chun Hock, 63, is one dim sum lover who cannot do without it.
I have been taking dim sum everyday for the past 20 years and have not had any heart trouble.
I usually order har kau (steamed prawn dumpling), siew mai (steamed minced meat dumpling) and pau (steamed dumpling), said the advertising representative when met at Hong Kong Dim Sum in Macalister Road yesterday.
It was reported that a study by Hong Kong's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department had found that some varieties of dim sum were high in fat and sodium.
The department, which tested 75 varieties, warned that they could be tiny time-bombs leading to obesity and severe cardio-vascular illnesses.

LONG-TIME FAN: Yeap says he has been taking dim sum everyday for the past 20 years without any ill effects. |
I also avoid fried dim sum stuff such as wonton and salad prawns because they are heaty, he said.
Another dim sum fan, Winner Teh, 27, said that each time she had the meal, she would gulp down at least a pot of Chinese tea.
I have been eating dim sum at least once a week for the last five years. Luckily, I've not had any major health problem, she added.
