Seven firms to be charged for the controversial U10 township

News update by FREDERICK FERNANDEZ of the Star

SHAH ALAM: Seven companies involved in the development of the controversial U10 township next to the Bukit Cahaya Seri Alam agriculture park would be taken to court next week for carrying out earth works without obtaining prior approval from the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).

Two other firms, which failed to follow requirements such as leaving a 250-metre buffer zone and other building specifications laid out by MBSA that led to environmental damage to certain parts of the park, would also be charged.

Investigations are being carried out against another six companies to determine if they had breached Section 33 of the Drains and Buildings by-laws and the Land Clearing Regulations MBSA 1990.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, who announced this after chairing a meeting with MBSA councillors and representatives of the 15 developers involved in the U10 project on Friday, said all local authorities would no longer be allowed to approve development projects involving sensitive sites such as hill slopes, forests and water catchments.

A technical committee chaired by the state secretary Datuk Ramlan Othman with representatives comprising Federal and state heads of departments, police and the Anti-Corruption Agency would now handle the task.
