New deadline to pay summonses

By Salina Khalid

THOSE who missed the Sept 30 deadline to pay at a discounted rate summonses issued by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) can still do so until the end of this month.

Mayor Ramli Mahmud said the city council had decided to extend the period due to overwhelming response from the public.

The 70% discount is being offered on all MBSA-issued summonses including for traffic and parking offences. Previously, the city council only gave discounts up to 50%.

Ramli ... ‘50,000 additional warning notices will be sent soon’
Since the whitening programme for compounds was launched on Aug 1, residents and motorists had gone to Wisma MBSA to grab the chance. There was a long queue at the city council's payment counters last Friday as people thought it was the last day to get the discount.

The discount was given in conjunction with the National Day celebrations and as part of MBSA’s efforts to reduce uncollected arrears in summons owed by defaulters.

“We collected a total of RM1.22mil from 31,104 compounds issued from Aug 1 to Sept 26.

“A total of 353,000 summonses were issued before July 31,” Ramli told reporters after chairing the MBSA full board meeting last Friday.

Ramli said the city council had issued 70,000 reminders to offenders and was planning to send another 50,000 notices soon.

Members of the public can still check whether they have summonses via SMS or by visiting the city council’s main counter at Wisma MBSA.

The counters at Wisma MBSA are open daily and special counters are open on Saturday.

In addition to the fixed counter at Wisma MBSA and the branch office in Bukit Rahman Putra in Sungai Buloh, payment for the summonses can also be made at the mobile counters.

The discount applies to summons es issued under the MBSA bylaws for offences under the Road, Drainage and Building Act, Local Government Act, Petty Traders bylaws, Food Handling, Licensing, Trade and Industrial bylaws and Advertising bylaws.

Those who want to check whether they have any summonses can do so by typing MBSA<space>vehicle number and send it to 33880 for their parking summons. Each successful SMS request is charged 50 sen.
