Sukma squash tourney to start earlier to avoid date clash

PETALING JAYA: The Sukma (Malaysia Games) squash tournament has been brought forward and shortened to six days because it clashes with the Milo All-Star International Junior Championships.

The Sukma opening ceremony will be held on May 28 but the squash competitions will be held from May 25-30.

The players will then go on to play in the international junior meet, which will be held at the Astaka Courts here from June 1-5.

The Selangor Squash Rackets Association (SSRA) secretary, Mary Ong, who is also the organising secretary for the international tournament, said yesterday that they were not putting any unnecessary pressure on the players to feature in two competitions over such a short period of time.

“Not all the players for the international junior meet will feature in Sukma. Only the top four boys and four girls will represent their states in the Games,” she said.

“I don’t think the two competitions will be a big burden on the players.

“We encourage the players from Sukma to compete in the All-Star event as well. The states also have other players to send to the tournament.

“The Selangor Sukma players will not only feature in these two competitions but they will also compete in the Singapore Junior Open soon after the All-Star championships.”

The All-Star championships have attracted a total of 392 players – 211 local and 180 from nine countries.

The championships offer prizes of RM40,000 in cash and RM30,000 in kind.

It is the biggest junior tournament in the country and has five categories of competitions – Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 – for both boys and girls.

Penang’s Low Wee Wern, who finished third in the British Junior Open in January, is the favourite to win the girls’ Under-15 title.

Wee Wern, who will also compete in Sukma, is the top seed and she is tipped to play against Dipika Pallikal of India in the final.

Dipika won the German Junior Open Under-15 title two weeks ago.

Among the other players who will feature in Sukma and also the All-Star championships are Sally Looi, Delia Arnold, Lim Yoke Wah and Nabilla Ariffin.

Selangor’s Tan Yan Xin, who was the runner-up in the Scottish Junior Open Under-11 division last year, is the top seed for the girls’ Under-13 competition.

She is expected to play against India’s V. Anwesha Reddy in the final.
