Weaknesses do not mean NS is a failure, says Najib

BY CELESTE FONG

PETALING JAYA: Although the national service programme has weaknesses and encountered problems, it does not mean that it is a failure, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

“When we encounter weaknesses in a programme, it does not mean that we've failed to attain the programme's objective,” he said on RTM 1’s Isu Semasa programme last night.

Najib said more than 50% of the participants who took part in a survey to gauge the effectiveness of the programme had expressed confidence in it.

“This is a sign that we have succeeded,” said Najib.

Some 25,000 National Service participants were asked to fill an evaluation form after they completed their three-month programme.

Najib added that the NS Training Department was in the process of examining the evaluation and would come out with an analysis.

Unlike the NS programmes in Singapore and South Korea, which focused solely on military training, Najib said Malaysia wanted a programme that would help the country progress towards building a bangsa Malaysia.

“I’ll give a detailed report on whether the programme is successful in meeting the objective of racial integration when the survey is completed,” he said when asked to comment on the issue of racial integration in the course of the programme.

Najib said the three months provided opportunities for the trainees to make friends, build trust and learn to be team members.

Asked about the troubled youths in NS camps, he said the authorities split groups at camps into two and those who were considered juvenile delinquents were given counselling.

On the NS trainers, Najib said they were all experienced individuals, adding that those who were only one or two years older than the trainees themselves had proven that they could relate to them as there was no generation gap.
