Ministry bans Faye Wong’s song at upcoming concert

BY RENEE CHOONG

PETALING JAYA: Chinese diva Faye Wong has been banned from singing the song In the Name of Love from her latest album at her concert at Stadium Merdeka on April 23.

Concert organiser Galaxy Production, which is responsible for bringing the star to Malaysia, has been informed by the Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry not to play that song during her one-night concert.

Concert spokesman Eric Chen confirmed the ban when asked about reports that the Chinese government had disallowed the song to be played there.

According to BBC news which quoted the Xinhua News Agency, the song was banned in China because the Chinese government deemed the lyrics “opium is warm and sweet” as “too decadent and will influence the health of young people.”

The Hong Kong-based Wong, also known as the darling of Chinese alternative music, will be here to promote her new album It’s My Style which has songs in Mandarin and Cantonese.

On the concert, Chen said: “We are lucky to be able to convince her to come to Malaysia as she is the type who only wants to do concerts when she feels like it. Well, I guess we got her at the right time.”

The Beijing-born artiste, who was linked to Nicholas Tse, had her first concert in Malaysia in 1995, followed by another in 1999.
