SMS greetings to gain political support

From the Chinese Press

POLITICIANS have taken advantage of the Chinese New Year celebration to canvas for support from voters via the Short Messaging Service (SMS) by customising their seasons greetings with political connotations, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The daily reported that both ruling and opposition parties displayed creativity with witty slogans as the general election drew closer.

Among the messages complete with party logos were lines such as “New things for the New Year, vote for xx party for a new era” and “Support xx party, only then there will be hope in life”.

The daily reported that many mobile phone users received messages sent mainly by Barisan Nasional component parties and the opposition DAP.

Sin Chew reported that it had been predicted that SMS would become a major campaigning tool in the coming general election.

According to last year’s statistics, SMS has become one of the most popular modes of communication among the more than 10 million mobile phone users in the country.

China Press reported a rise in egg prices caused by the threat of bird flu and the higher cost of chicken feed.

The Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Eggs Traders Association, the daily said, issued a statement that prices of eggs of all grades would go up by two sen from yesterday for a week.

Nanyang Siang Pau reported that Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon had suggested that the Federal Government allocate funds to help poultry farmers if the bird flu, which had hit many neighbouring countries, occurred locally.
