Jelapang toll plaza to go

BY RASLAN BAHAROM

TAIPING: The Jelapang toll plaza along the North South Expressway, which is prone to accidents and traffic congestion due to a bottleneck in the area, will be dismantled.

Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the Perak government had agreed to the original proposal of the Works Ministry for the toll plaza to be dismantled.

With this, northbound motorists entering Ipoh will do so via a new toll plaza, possibly at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

Southbound vehicles heading to the city will exit the expressway via another new toll plaza to be built not far from the present Jelapang toll.

Under the plan submitted by Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, two 5km-long side roads are to be built parallel to the existing toll-free stretch from the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza to the Jelapang toll plaza and the latter is to be dismantled to ease congestion faced by south-bound travellers passing through it.

Vehicles, especially heavy ones, often lose control while descending from the Menora Tunnel, resulting in serious and fatal accidents.

Tajol Rosli, speaking to reporters at a Hari Raya gathering hosted by state assembly Speaker Datuk Mat Isa Ismail in Changkat Jering yesterday, said the project would cost about RM260mil.

“The cost of the project will be borne by the Federal Government as the Perak government cannot afford to spend an amount which is about half the state budget,” he added.

Following Samy Vellu’s proposal, announced early this year, the state government had submitted a counter-proposal that the Jelapang toll plaza be relocated instead to the Sungai Perak rest area, some 20km away in Manong, Kuala Kangsar. This proposal was not pursued.

Also present at yesterday's gathering were Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, state exco member Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan and Tajol Rosli’s wife Datin Seri Kamariah Mokri.
