Ex-Nato chief: US has plans to attack countries

THE United States has devised a five-year plan to attack seven Islamic countries following the Sept 11 terrorist attack in America, Utusan Malaysia reported yesterday.

It quoted former North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commander General Wesley Clark as saying that US President George W. Bush wanted to attack Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan.

Gen Clark, who recently announced his intention to run as a Democrat presidential candidate, said he learnt of the plan from a senior military officer in Washington in November 2001.

He said he was against the plan because it neither tackled the real source of terrorism nor use worldwide support for international law.

Gen Clark made the comments in an autobiography called The Clark Critique, which was published in part in the latest edition of the weekly magazine Newsweek.

He claimed that the Bush administration wanted to attack Iraq on the premise that the country was sponsoring terrorism although there was no proof to substantiate the allegation.

Utusan also carried a story calling for stricter guidelines in awarding titles like “Datuk” and “Datuk Seri”.

Former chief secretary to the government Tan Sri Abdullah Ayub said the inundation of people carrying such titles would tarnish the image of the country.

“I realise bestowing such titles to the people is the right of the Rulers but it should be limited to only two or three people a year.

“Only those who have really contributed to the country or those who have really excelled in their field of endeavour should be given the titles,” he said.

Berita Harian reported that PAS stalwart Datuk Dr Harun Din would be contesting for a state seat in Perlis in the next election. PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang made the announcement during a political sermon in Kangar recently.
