Siti Hasmah: Give disabled kids chance to learn

PUTRAJAYA: Parents should not stigmatise their disabled children but should instead give them the chance to train themselves, said Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali.

“They think disabled children will not be able to equip themselves. (But) they (the children) still can if given the opportunity, so why waste it?

“Why not try? We have examples, the blind doing all their best, even getting doctorates,” she said, adding that parents should not think that it was “the end of the world” if they have a disabled child in the family.

Dr Siti Hasmah was speaking to reporters after receiving a cheque for RM50,000 from Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd corporate affairs head Azlam Shah Alias at Seri Perdana yesterday.

The money was raised from Tesco Puchong’s “Tesco Charity of the Year” programme with Rumah Insaniah Dr Siti Hasmah, a home set up by the Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled in 1998.

Some of the home’s residents who were at the cheque presentation took the opportunity to have photographs taken with Dr Siti Hasmah.

Dr Siti Hasmah said some parents were not aware that they could register their disabled child with the Welfare Department.

“They can get assistance not in financial terms but (in) training later on and putting them in proper schools,” she added.

She called on employers to provide employment to disabled people, especially those who had been trained. She also said major corporations should have a quota in recruiting the disabled.

“They should not be discriminated (against) because they are capable. Employers should give them a chance especially after they have been trained,” she added.
