Anxious youngsters jam up website and SMS server

PETALING JAYA: Youngsters eager to find out if they had been picked for national service, their parents and also relatives, have “jammed up” the national service website and also the national service short messaging service (SMS) server.

Members of the public complained that they could not access the website since 10am yesterday.

Murad Rashid, the website project manager, said they were doing everything they could to improve the situation as soon as possible.

“Because we got so many hits, 100 queries at the same time, we are upgrading and fine-tuning the website,” he added.

As for those who had sent SMS, as at 3pm yesterday, 80,000 people received replies, while another 30,000 did not because they did not use the correct format when sending the SMS.

A spokesperson for the National Service Department (NSD) said more than 110,000 people had sent SMS via all the major telecommunication service providers.

“The public should not expect the normal split-second response for SMS because of the high volume received.

“The response time using Maxis was three minutes at 9pm on Monday and by Tuesday morning the response time had prolonged to half an hour or more.

“This was due to people continuously resending their SMS,'' said the spokesperson.

Members of the public are also advised not to resend their messages if they are sure they had used the correct format.

Only two formats are accepted. If checking by using the identity card number, the correct SMS format is KN-860513015008.

If checking by name, for example Mohd Ali bin Omar, the correct format is SemakNama-Mohd Ali Omar .

All messages should be sent to 36188.

Among the common errors are sending both identity card numbers and names, the using of unnecessary commas, spaces and brackets, and using the wrong prefixes in the messages.

As for pre-paid mobile users, they are advised to have a balance sufficient to receive messages from their service providers.

Defence Ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Siti Azizah Abod said the SMS service was provided by a private company, which charged RM2 to cover its operational cost.

“The service is a commitment from the corporate sector to assist the Government in the implementation of the national service.

“The cost of the service is borne by the company and it also undertakes all responsibilities in operating and delivering the service,” she said.

SMS: The public can also send short messaging service (SMS) to check on the status by typing in the letters KN- followed by their identity card number and send the message to 36188.

WEBSITE: The public can also assess the website at www.khidmatnegara.gov.my and key in their identity card number to check the status.
