Taipei: Activists submitted the signatures of almost one million Taiwan citizens to the island’s election commission calling for questions on two gay rights issues to be put up for vote at national elections in November.
Some 550,000 signatures were gathered for one initiative, which would grant equal marriage rights to same-sex unions and a further 400,000 were gathered for a parallel proposal that would mandate the inclusion of discussions about LGBT issues in the sex education curriculum in senior high schools.
