BEIJING: A boy from eastern China survived after he copied a cartoon he had just seen by jumping from the 10th storey of a building trying to use an umbrella as a parachute, according to a television report.

The boy from Suzhou in Jiangusu province has undergone extensive surgery and his injuries are no longer life-threatening, Suzhou TV reported. It was not clear if he has suffered permanent injuries.

A doctor who spoke to the boy’s relatives said the child had been watching a cartoon at home showing the imaginary use of an umbrella as a parachute.

He jumped from the building, but luckily his fall was partially broken by a power line, witnesses were quoted as saying.

His mother collapsed at the scene when she saw him lying injured, video recorded by passers-by showed.

The boy was not named, nor details of when the accident happened.

A five-year-old girl from Urumqi in Xinjiang jumped from an 11th floor apartment last month holding an umbrella and landed on a fourth-floor balcony, according to media reports. She was seriously injured.

Accidents involving teenagers or children mimicking dangerous stunts from films or television shows have been widely reported by mainland media and prompted heated debate over whether the government should adopt an age-rating system similar to those enforced in Western countries. - South China Morning Post
