The Penang state government’s controversial plan of reclaiming three islands to fund its RM46bil Penang Transport Master Plan has sparked fears that it could irreversibly ruin the marine ecosystem beyond the proposed impact zone.

An estimated 3,000 fishermen from the southern coast of Penang, where the new islands are slated to be located, as well as an additional 6,000 from Perak have voiced their concerns that land reclamation could potentially hurt their livelihoods.
