KUCHING: Eight Sarawakians who were stranded in Liberia after falling victim to an alleged job scam are set to return home following diplomatic efforts by the Foreign Ministry to secure their repatriation.
They are scheduled to arrive at KLIA on Monday (March 4), after which they will board another flight to Kuching.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the Sarawakians had been stranded in the Liberian capital Monrovia since Feb 4 after allegedly being cheated by a Malaysian job syndicate.
He said he had been communicating with Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah since he was made aware of the case about a month ago.
"I am grateful for the all the efforts by the minister and ministry, who since the beginning, were earnest in ensuring successful diplomatic negotiations with the Foreign Affairs Minister of Liberia, Gbehzohgar M Findley, and even despatched two officers as special envoys to Monrovia on Feb 26," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 3).
This is the second incident this year of Malaysians being stranded abroad by a job scam.
On Feb 17, 47 Malaysians returned home following their release from detention in a provincial Cambodian prison after they were offered high-paying jobs which did not materialise.
Yii urged the authorities to investigate job syndicates which were enticing Malaysians to other countries with the promise of lucrative jobs.
"Those responsible must be brought to justice and better protection, especially proper education, must be given to our people so that they will be more aware and vigilant on such matters," he said.
