PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar supports the call by the government to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the state of the Judiciary, says its president George Varughese.

He said that the Bar has repeatedly called for the setting up of such an RCI since August 2018, when the allegations of judicial interference and judicial misconduct first surfaced.

"This RCI provides a significant and crucial opportunity that the government must seize," he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 22).

He said that the Bar has been calling for an RCI since Justice Datuk Dr Hamid Sultan Abu Backer’s presentation at the Malaysian Bar’s International Malaysia Law Conference 2018.

Varughese said that the government should expand the RCI's terms of reference to include recommending holistic proposals for thorough and comprehensive reforms to improve and strengthen the institution of the Judiciary.

He said the Bar is confident that the members of the RCI will execute their exceedingly important work with the greatest dedication and integrity, "leaving no stone unturned in their quest for the truth and proposals for reform."
