Three killed, three injured in Prai construction site mishap

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Three men died and three others sustained serious injuries when the steel frame of a building collapsed at Lorong Perusaahan Maju 8 in Prai.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Saadon Mokhtar said firemen from the Prai, Perda and Bukit Mertajam stations rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 4.42pm on Friday (Feb 15).

The deceased include a Malaysian and two Myanmar nationals, while the injured are two Bangladeshis and an Indonesian.

The Malaysian has been identified as 46-year-old P. Kumar, 46, while the Myanmar nationals are 32-year-old Rofi Khan and 20-year-old Amir Udin Abol Kasim. 

The injured have yet to be identified.

Saadon said it was learnt that the building was being rebuilt after it was razed in a fire about two years ago.

He also said that initial investigations found that there were about 30 workers at the scene and they were about to return home after work.

Saadon added the 30 firemen and five officers were assisted by Civil Defence personnel and voluntary firefighters from Juru and Padang Lalang.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said that the bodies were sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for a postmortem, adding that the injured were also sent there for treatment.
