Two arrested for trying to bribe cops at Kota Kinabalu drink-driving roadblock

During the five-hour operation, police conducted breathalyzer tests on 57 motorists, with 14 found to have excessive alcohol in their blood.

KOTA KINABALU: Two men have been arrested for trying to bribe a senior policeman to escape getting penalised for driving under the influence of alcohol.

District police chief Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said the men, aged 27 and 30, were arrested during a traffic operation codenamed "Op Mabuk" conducted between 1am and 6am on Sunday (Jan 20).

"They tried to give a bribe of RM500 to a senior policeman despite receiving three warnings from the officer on duty.

"They were arrested and the money seized, to be handed over to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for further action," he explained.

ACP Habibi said the two suspects have been held to facilitate investigations under Section 17(b) of the MACC Act 2009.

"We will continue carrying out enforcement to ensure that motorists follow the law and traffic rules, as well as prevent driving under the influence of alcohol," he added.

ACP Habibi said the the team, comprising four senior policemen and 31 personnel from the district and state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, inspected 76 vehicles and 83 people in two roadblocks around Kota Kinabalu.

"We conducted breathalyser tests on 57 motorists, and found 14 individuals with excessive alcohol in their blood.

"In the same operation, we issued 39 summonses for various offences, including driving without a license," he said.
