PETALING JAYA: The Special Parliamentary Select Committee on the Budget is a first for the Malaysian Parliament, says Jeli MP Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
“We plan to be active, constructive, productive and inclusive. Will begin work mid-January,” said the veteran politician, who is commonly known as Tok Pa.
On Tuesday (Dec 11), Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin had shared a photo on Twitter of a “historic first meeting” of the committee chaired by Mustapa on Twitter. Mustapa made his comments when retweeting Khairy's photo.
The shared photo includes Khairy, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, Mustapa, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Wangsa Maju MP Datin Paduka Dr Tan Yee Kew and Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi as members of the of the Select Committee.
Khairy added that they plan to hold pre-Budget public consultations to “hear what you want in next year’s budget”.
He will be representing Barisan Nasional as shadow finance minister.
On Tuesday (Dec 4), Subang MP Wong Chen said that Parliament is set to have six new standing committees, including a budget committee.
Other new standing committees are those for the consideration of bills; on rights and gender equality; on major public appointments; on defence and home affairs; and on federal-state relations.
The Subang MP said this would give MPs the chance to engage ministries, develop policies, and consider state issues to ensure continuity of government.
