PETALING JAYA: There is no contradiction between the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and Article 153 of the Federal Constitution, claims the Malaysian Bar.
Its president George Varughese (pic) said that there are provisions in the ICERD that recognises that formal equality — where the law treats people the same — may not be sufficient to eliminate discrimination.
