PETALING JAYA: Stevie Chan Keng Leong (pic) has officially announced his candidacy in the upcoming Port Dickson by-election against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a press statement on Thursday (Sept 20), Chan said his candidacy is a message that the rakyat cannot be taken for granted.

"I stand by my call that this forced by-election is completely unnecessary and untimely," he said.

"At a time where everyone needs to work together to realise the aspiration of (Pakatan) Harapan voters, especially in the reform agenda and policy-making, such a distraction is unwanted," he said.

"I applaud the Election Commission's (EC) allowance for a 14-days campaign period.

"I have limited means, but I hope with the support of those who share my concerns, we could use the days to show our politicians - no matter from which side - that the voice of the rakyat cannot be taken for granted again," he added.

Chan, who is @tapaimalaya on Twitter, had previously announced his intention to contest on Twitter.

He was previously known as a controversial Twitter user by the name @youtiup and was investigated for allegedly seditious tweets.

The EC has set Sept 29 for nomination day and Oct 13 for polling day.

The parliamentary seat in Negri Sembilan was vacated by MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah of PKR after he resigned on Sept 12 to make way for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's return to Parliament.

In GE14, Danyal won the seat with a majority of 17,710 votes against Barisan Nasional's Datuk V.S Mogan and Mahfuz Roslan of PAS.
