KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pic) assures the people that holding two posts, including being the Finance Minister, will only bring positive developments.
He said he understood the concerns of the people, looking at previous records of the former chief minister (Tan Sri Musa Aman), but things are about to change.
“Don’t think that I will be just like him (Musa), and don’t judge a book by its cover,” Shafie said after meeting with civil servants at the state administration building here Monday (June 25).
He said as the Chief Minister and Finance Minister, he will try his best to make Sabah’s financial situation better, as his ultimate goal is to make sure that everyone in the state will be able to enjoy its wealth.
“Give me time to fix what needs to be fixed, we are working towards reviving Sabah’s economy and reduce wastage of funds, as we want the money to go back to the people,” he said.
Shafie said sectors that contribute to the economy, including tourism, education and health, will be relooked into.
He said security aspects are also being focused upon, as a secure state helps generate income for the nation.
“Restructuring will be conducted where needed, and maybe downsizing would be considered. We will deliberate and decide on what is best to revive the economy and reduce waste of funds,” he said.
He said that government-linked companies (GLCs) are also being scrutinised for this purpose.
Meanwhile, Shafie urged all civil servants in Sabah to give their best to the people and serve them with dedication.
“We want to deliver new policies and change the government in a positive way, but we cannot do that if there’s no cooperation from all parties,” he said.
He said it was important that the delivery system of the civil service to be in tip top condition for the betterment of the people and for the government to succeed in its quest for a better Malaysia.
“Our civil service has somewhat been a model to many other countries in the world, and we hope to be able to improve, with cooperation from all in the civil service,” Shafie added.
