JOHOR BARU: The Johor Malay Chamber of Commerce of Malaysia (DPMMNJ) supports the decision by the Federal Government to drop the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail project (HSR).

Its president Datuk Syed Ali Tawfik al-Attas claimed that traders and businesses in the Johor Baru district also lauded the move as the project would have a negative impact on them.

"If the project goes on as planned, Singaporeans will bypass Johor Baru resulting in a decline of business for our traders," he told reporters at its headquarters in Larkin here.

Syed Ali said apart from local customers, businesses here also depend on Singaporeans to shop and dine in Johor Baru.

He said thousands of Singaporeans come to Johor Baru especially on weekends and public holidays to shop or visit their relatives or friends here.

"If the HRS takes place, most of them might skip Johor Baru and take the train straight to Kuala Lumpur and no longer stop here like they did before," said Syed Ali.

He said instead on spending RM100bil for the HSR project, the Government should look at ways to improve the existing transportation modes including the existing KTM train services.
