KOTA KINABALU: A toddler was among five in a family that was killed in an accident involving a car and an express bus near Kg Belisok along the Ranau road on Thursday (May 17).

A sixth family member is still fighting for her life, due to severe internal injuries following the 2pm incident.

Ranau police chief Deputy Supt Farhan Lee Abdullah has identified the victims as Mohd Aziratul Khizam Azis, 23, who was the driver, his mother Rubiah Anggau, 59, his sister Azlina Azis, 35, and his father Azis Pindungan, 60. All four died on the spot in the accident.

Aziratul's two-year-old niece, Nur Aathera Darquez Richard, who is Azlina's daughter, died while receiving treatment at the Ranau hospital.

DSP Farhan said the injured victim, Harmawati Azis, 30, is still being treated for severe internal injuries.

"From our initial investigations, this family were on their way from Ranau to Telupid after grocery shopping. As they were reaching the location of the accident, the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove into the opposite lane.

"Their car then collided with an oncoming express bus," he said.

DSP Farhan said the car skidded and overturned, causing the victims to be pinned under the wreckage.

Fire and rescue personnel arrived to extricate the victims.

He added that the driver, his two assistants and 25 passengers in the express bus sustained no injuries.
