PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has defied the odds and global trends with a peaceful transition of power; becoming a new icon of democracy, said Datuk Seri Nazir Razak.

In congratulating Tun Dr Mahathir Mohmad after being sworn in as the seventh prime minister of the country, Nazir said this was in line with the will of people.

“No words can adequately describe the journey back to his old office. Malaysia has also defied the odds and global trends with this peaceful transition of power in line with the will of the people - Malaysia is a new icon of democracy,” he said in an Instagram post on Friday (May 11).

The instagram post was a black and white picture of Dr Mahathir and Nazir’s father Tun Razak, who was Malaysia’s second Prime Minister.

“Tun M has always gone to great lengths to praise his mentor Tun Razak (even at the height of tensions with Najib and UMNO). Both of them share the same determination to nation-build to the best of their ability and limits of personal sacrifices,” added Nazri who is brother of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Nazir also wished Dr Mahathir and his new team every success in building the new Malaysia as envisaged in the PH manifesto.

“As I have argued ad nauseam, Malaysia needs major recalibration, but all attempts under the old order failed due to structural rigidities and vested interest. Now you can!,” he said.
