Daughter of former Sarawak Chief Minister not contesting in GE14

SIBU: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is expected to field a new face for the Tanjung Manis parliament seat of Sarawak in GE14.

This follows after the incumbent Datuk Norah Abdul Rahman (pic) has decided not to defend her seat due to health reasons.

Norah, who is the daughter of former Yang di-Pertua Negeri and Chief Minister Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, had posted her decision on her Facebook on Friday (April 20).

"Greetings to all FB friends. I have met the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan to let them know that I want to take a rest from the general election due to health reasons," she posted.

Norah, 59, also hoped that Sarawak Barisan would "win big and win with style" in the election.

She also called on the people to give their fullest support to the Chief Minister and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the polls.

"The people in the parliamentary constituency of Tanjung Manis have always shown their strongest support to PBB and Barian Nasional. In this election, we will go to the ground in a large group to ensure a big victory for the new candidate," she said.

Norah won the seat uncontested in the 2008 election. She successfully retained it in the next election by defeating Jurina Mut of PAS with a majority of 10,964 votes.
