Sarawak CM: I'll talk to PM before making candidate announcements

KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg (pic) will communicate with Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak before announcing the state's Barisan Nasional candidates.

"I will get in touch with the Prime Minister," he said to a question about when he would announce the candidates.

Asked if the announcement would be made soon, he said it was not confirmed yet.

Abang Johari, who is state Barisan chairman, was speaking to reporters after launching a new road and bridge in Matang here on Thursday (April 19).

He was asked to comment on Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's remarks that Barisan candidates would be announced by the respective state chairmen.
Zahid was reported as saying that Najib had empowered all state Barisan chairmen to announce the election candidates.

"We (the Barisan leadership) have handed it over to the state Barisan chiefs to decide on a suitable date to announce the candidates. So we leave it to them. There is no need for any hint from any party," he told reporters in Bagan Datuk, Perak.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari called on Sarawakians to choose sincere leaders who could plan for the state's future development.

"This is what we have been doing all along. Our MPs and assemblymen work together for the benefit of the people," he said in his speech.

He added that his vision for Sarawak included preserving unity, taking back the state's rights which had been eroded over the years and continuing to develop the state.

"Our future is bright if we remain united," he said.
