Terengganu police arrest trio over cable theft

KUALA TERENGGANU: Police arrested three men for allegedly stealing power and communication cables for about a year on Monday (Feb 5).

Known as the "Awang Cenneh" gang, the aged between 22 and 39, are believed to strip the copper from the stolen cables and sell them to feed their drug addiction.

Kuala Terengganu Deputy OCPD Supt Suffian Sulaiman said the men would carry out the deed in the night before selling the copper as scrap metal.

"A kilogramme of copper could fetch about RM17, and we found about 40m of cable when we arrested them," he said Tuesday (Feb 6), adding that the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.

The suspects were remanded until Friday (Feb 9) to assist in investigations.

The case is being investigated for theft and mischief by injury to telegraph cable under sections 379 and 431 of the Penal Code.
