KUALA LUMPUR: Following each fire tragedy there is a brief period of heightened public awareness about safety measures, but it is swiftly followed by a return to apathy.

It is a pattern that worries Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Depart­ment director Khirudin Drahman, who said this is one of the factors contributing to fire hazards at the People’s Housing Project (PPR).
