KUALA LUMPUR: Police will take “appropriate action” against the organisers of this Saturday’s anti-kleptocracy rally at Petaling Jaya's Padang Timur if they do not heed the police’s directive to not hold the rally there, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
“What that appropriate action is, I cannot say because we want to see what the organisers are going to do,” he said at the National Innovation and Creative Economy (Nice) Expo 2017 here on Thursday.
Noor Rashid said police had evaluated Padang Timur and deemed it unsuitable as a venue due to its proximity to an entry-exit point to the Federal Highway.
“We have met with the organisers, and informed them we cannot allow the rally to take place at this field as we have to ensure public safety, that traffic is not impacted, and the residents living nearby don’t suffer,” he said.
He also issued a warning to Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos against interfering with the rally.
“We have also engaged with Jamal. If he does anything, we will see what offence he commits. If he violates a local government bylaw, we’ll ask local police to catch him.
“My advice to Jamal is, don’t disturb the rally, don’t cause any trouble and spark off unrest,” said Noor Rashid.
The “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” rally is being organised by Pakatan Harapan on Oct 14. Jamal has said he plans a counter-rally.
