Ti: DAP's Liew should apologise to PM

Liew Chin Tong

PETALING JAYA: DAP's Liew Chin Tong should retract his allegations and apologise to the Prime Minister for stirring racial sentiments by quoting the  latter's speech out of context, said Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker.

The MCA religious harmony bureau chairman said this in response to Liew’s comment that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s speech at the Chinese Community Patriotic Assembly on Saturday was an implied threat against Chinese Malaysian voters.

“It is very malicious and ill intended for DAP MP Liew Chin Tong to state otherwise or distort the true meaning and context of the Prime Minister’s speech to mean it as a threat or having elements of a threat,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Ti said Najib was only being honest when he proclaimed that this country needed political stability and continuous harmony to progress further.

“He started by saying we have a vision for Malaysia. He further stated that is why the Barisan Nasional Government is a moderate government committed  to peace and harmony and mutual respect in this country.

"He further elaborated that when there’s no peace and harmony, the Chinese will be the first to be targeted in this country,” Ti added.

Ti said Najib then elaborated on how the Government fought extremism by saying: “We fight the Islamic State (terrorist group), we make sure they don’t harm Malaysians including the Chinese in Malaysia”.

He said that Najib was addressing the audience with all sincerity and in good faith.

“It was in that very context of making a statement of concern. None of the more than 13,000 Chinese Guilds and Associations leaders and members felt offended or took the Prime Minister’s timely reminder as a threat,” he added.
