KUCHING: Police were forced to use a taser gun to stop a woman from committing suicide at Kampung Bintawa Tengah here early Thursday.
Kuching district police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai (pic) said the woman, 40, had doused herself in petrol and voiced her intention to take her own life when police arrived at the scene.
The police despatched a multi-purpose vehicle unit immediately after receiving the distress call from the woman’s mother at 12.30am Thursday.
“Our men tried to persuade the woman against carrying out her plan, but it did not succeed. We were left with no choice but to use a taser gun to stop her from burning herself. This enabled our officers to make an arrest and avoid harm,” he said.
Police seized a bottle of petrol, a cake knife and clothing belonging to the woman, who was arrested and remanded for four days under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide.
“We will also carry out investigations under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code to enable the woman to undergo psychiatric evaluation,” ACP Abang Ahmad said.
He added that the police have yet to find the motive of the woman’s suicide attempt.
