Rat shuts down Klang hospital cafeteria

KLANG: The cafeteria at the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) here has been shut down after a video of a rodent feasting on food in a display cabinet went viral on social media, allegedly posted by an unhappy employee.

In the 32-second clip, the rodent can be seen walking inside a buffet food warmer.

It stops along the edge of a tray and pulls out a piece of a vegetable and starts eating.

It is believed the clip was shot and circulated via social media by a hospital employee unhappy with the canteen's level of cleanliness.

A two-week closure notice has also been slapped on the canteen operator, effective from 2pm Friday until Sept 1.

When contacted, HTAR director Dr Ding Lay Ming said the canteen had been ordered to close.

"We are not certain if the video was taken in our hospital canteen, but we are using this opportunity to instruct the canteen to undergo a thorough clean-up.

"We will inspect the place again this evening and if we are satisfied with the cleanliness, we will allow them to reopen later this evening,'' she added.

Dr Ding also said it was the Health Department's standard operating procedure to impose a two-week closure when such incidents occur, but would be allowed to operate as soon as it has been properly cleaned.

This is not the first time the canteen is having problems with rodents.

The canteen was previously closed down for two weeks in April 2015 for rodent infestation and a lack of cleanliness.

Several patients interviewed by The Star after the 2015 incident had said the entire hospital was infested with rats.

One even alleged that he had been bitten in one of the wards.
