Man sleeping by roadside killed after head crushed by vehicle

KOTA KINABALU: A 53-year-old man who was sleeping by the roadside in Ranau was killed after his head was crushed by a passing vehicle after midnight on Wednesday.

The victim identified as Jupiri Kuding from Kg. Suminimpod was believed to have slept there as he was drunk.

Ranau district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Farhan Lee said passers-by had noticed the man lying by the roadside at about 12.50am and decided to check on him, adding that the police were called when they realised he was badly injured.

DSP Farhan said Jupiri was found with severe head injuries and was believed to have died on the spot.

"The driver who hit this victim may not have realised that he was lying there as there are no streetlights and road was dark," he said.

Jupiri has also been identified as the man who used to loiter around Ranau and walk aimlessly.

DSP Farhan urged the driver who had hit the man as well as witnesses to the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act.
