Fathers Day cut: Residents of Macallum Street Ghaut receiving free haircuts sponsored by Tanjung MCA Youth chief Lim Swee Bok in conjunction with Fathers Day at Pangsapuri Pelangi.
GEORGE TOWN: While it is common for children to buy gifts for their daddies on Fathers Day, an apartment community here did something different by giving fathers free haircuts.
Families of Pelangi Apartments in Macallum Street Ghaut roped in 20 hairstylists assisted by 30 helpers at their community hall to provide complimentary snips for the gentlemen.
Organised by the Block Five Residents Association and the Taman Pelangi 1Malaysia Community, the event was sponsored by Tanjung MCA Youth chief Lim Swee Bok.
“It was such a good idea. Most men don’t think too much about grooming, so giving the fathers fashionable haircuts was truly a pleasant treat,” Lim said, adding that he sponsored 100 haircuts by Allan Quick Cut salon as well as 10 Raya hampers to Muslim families.
Resident Paul Ting, 29, brought his 57-year-old father Thomas, and both of them got their haircuts while seated next to each other.
Paul said Fathers Day was always important for his family, where all of his siblings would take their father out for dinner.
Form One student Samantha Chan came down with her father, Eric, 45.
“I am happy to get a haircut with daddy.
“I also gave him a handmade card to thank him for his love,” she said.
Meanwhile, Jelutong Gerakan division members brought smiles all around the Jelutong market as they gave out 500 chocolate chip muffins.
Gerakan Sungai Pinang coordinator Ng Fook On said they hoped the gesture would remind people to honour their fathers.
