PETALING JAYA: The family that cycles together, stays together and this is the case for entrepreneur brothers Mark and Hugh Koh, who have made the sport a part of their activities.

“Both of us are constantly busy working. But cycling is something that we always make time for. We cycle during the weekends, and sometimes, on weekdays before work,” says Hugh.

“Even our parents get involved during holidays,” Mark said. “We also have different groups of keen cyclists that we ride with. It fosters a good community spirit. It’s also a great way to network,” he said.

Mark, 35, and Hugh, 32, are the founders of Malaysian streetwear and lifestyle brand Pestle and Mortar. Loving cycling so much, they have incorporated the sport into their business.

“Our brand is about who we are. If cycling is part of our lives, then naturally, it’ll be part of our brand as well. Producing a range of cycling wear was a natural progression for us,” notes Mark, on the kits they have on.

The two men encourage their staff to get in on cycling as well.

“We tell them to join us on our weekend trips ... more like a team-building thing. We have invited some of our customers to join us too,” Hugh said.

Their best memories of cycling would be of riding around Damansara Heights when they were young.

“The area has lots of hills. It’s a very nice, quiet and safe place to cycle in. It was sort of our playground when it came to cycling during our early childhood years,” relates Mark.

The two brothers are more serious about the sport now. They also travel the globe to cycle.

“We travelled to Japan recently, and we took our bikes there. Even if we don’t carry our bikes with us, we usually meet up with friends who are cyclists – and we’ll borrow their bikes for a ride,” said Hugh.

On July 30, the Star Media Group and property developer Sunsuria Bhd will host Ride for Malaysia to inspire national unity and patriotism in the run-up to National Day.

The event, to be flagged off at 6.30am at Sunsuria City, is a great opportunity for people of all ages and cultures to come together, enjoy the outdoors and explore Putrajaya South.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or not, there’ll be much to see and do. Whole families are welcome too!
