DENGKIL: The Customs Department dealt a major blow to an illegal gambling syndicate when it seized RM6.56mil worth of gambling machine components that were being smuggled in.
Customs Director-General Datuk T. Subromaniam said the components were smuggled in via eight shipping containers through Northport, Klang.
"We seized the machines on March 16 and 17 and continued our investigations, which led to the arrest of two syndicate members on Thursday," he told a press conference at the department's headquarters in Dengkil on Friday.
The components, which were being shipped from China, were marked as furniture to avoid suspicion.
"There were enough components to assemble 1,227 gambling machines, worth RM6.56mil," he said.
The two men were nabbed at a premise in Semenyih.
"We believe that they are directly connected with importing the machines.
"I do not rule out further arrests as we continue with our investigation," he said.
Subromaniam said he could not divulge further information on the case as it may jeopardise the investigation.
He urged the public to contact the department at 1800-88-8855 if they have any information on smuggling activities.
