SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional must use the opportunity of the political crisis brewing in Selangor to regain the confidence of people in the state.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the acceptance of the people of Selangor would make it easier for Barisan to wrest the state from the Opposition.
"We want BN to rise up again to the political situation previously, after the power that was held by BN was lost to the Opposition coalition in Selangor.
"It must be done in a continuous and strengthened manner so that the people will again have strong confidence in BN and Umno in Selangor," he said at a media conference after a meeting with students and staff of Universiti Teknoloji Mara (UiTM) on Friday.
Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar and UiTM Vice-Chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Hassan Said.
Dr Ahmad Zahid was commenting on the resolution by PAS' central committee on Thursday for its three state excos to remain in the Selangor government although PAS had terminated its political cooperation with PKR.
PAS' decision was announced by the party's deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who stated that exco members must hold on to their positions for as long as the Sultan of Selangor had given his consent under Article 53 Clause 77 of the Selangor State Constitution 1959.
PAS' three Selangor excos are Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, who holds the Housing, Building Management and Urban Living portfolio, Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (exco for Education, Human Capital Development, Science, Technology and Innovation) and Zaidy Abdul Talib (exco for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry).
PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said in a statement on Tuesday that the position of PAS in the Selangor state government would be decided by the PKR leadership after Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali returned from an official visit abroad.
Meanwhile, Dr Ahmad Zahid said Barisan respected the Selangor State Constitution and the powers of the Sultan of Selangor.
He added that Barisan was not planning to analyse the situation in Selangor but was more interested in ensuring that the coalition's machinery is strengthened following the latest developments.
"We should look at the work of Noh (who is Selangor Barisan chairman) and other members of the leadership at divisional level to undertake continuous efforts to wrest the state. I personally will come down to Selangor often to ensure that the ecosystem that has changed is strengthened by the existing Barisan machinery," he said. - Bernama.
