PETALING JAYA: The distribution of Kad Diskaun Siswa 1Malaysia (KADS1M) will be done in phases, said the Higher Education Ministry.
The ministry said that the distribution would start with students who had applied for the debit card with Bank Rakyat, and it advised students who have yet to open an account with Bank Rakyat to do so via www.bankrakyat.com.my/bppt
"Students who already have accounts with Bank Rakyat are still required to open a new account as this aid will only be channelled through the KADS1M debit account," the ministry said in a statement.
As of May 9, 919, 628 students had opened accounts with Bank Rakyat while the ministry has so far disbursed RM124,510mil to 498,040 students.
However, only 92,460 students have gone to collect their cards from the nearest Bank Rakyat Branch after being notified via email
KADS1M was put in place by the government to replace the book voucher scheme for tertiary students.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh previously said the debit card is preloaded with RM250, and can be used to buy books, computer accessories and academic/learning equipment.
He said the card would enable students to receive discounts when making purchases at participating vendors.
KADS1M was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the tabling of Budget 2017, and the Higher Education Ministry started distributing the beefed-up cards to students on March 28.
