ALOR SETAR: While Japan has sakura, Kedah too has its own cherry blossom that makes a picturesque scene at several places here.
Take a slow drive along Jalan Kuala Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Expressway, Darul Aman Expressway, Jalan Sultanah, Jalan Stadium, Jalan Gangsa, Jalan Langgar, Jalan Tun Razak, Persiaran Sultan Abdul Hamid and the surrounding areas of Wisma Darul Aman and Darul Aman Stadium, and you will find Tecoma trees in white and pink lining the streets.
In Kota Setar alone there are between 500 and 600 Tecoma trees (tabebuia rosea species) in full bloom.
Undergraduate Nurfarhana Azeri, 25, and private school teacher Muhammad Firdaus Hamzah, 27, who were married yesterday, decided to have their wedding shoot at the Al-Bukhary mosque with the Tecoma trees as the background.
“The view is so beautiful. It’s like you are in Japan and the best part is, you don’t have to be there to have such a nice picture taken,” Nurfarhana said.
Muhammad Firdaus was equally impressed.
“Actually, I was a bit reluctant to come here. I’m so happy that I made the right decision in the end. This is so beautiful,” he said.
Tecoma is a type of forest tree that comes into full bloom during the dry season, normally twice around March and in June or July.
Any rain during its flowering period will cause the flowers to drop.
The Alor Setar City Council has directed all new housing projects in Kota Setar to have Tecoma trees planted at the playground or any open space.
