JOHOR BARU: The saying that “the apple does not fall far from the tree” is true with Johor Fire and Rescue Department officer Nursyafiq Farhain.

A recent clip of Nursyafiq, who is the son of Malaysian rocker Saleem, singing has gone viral on social media and is proving to be a hit, especially among women.

The 23-year-old bachelor said he was surprised that the clip had made him an instant celebrity and garnered him many fans on social media.

“I’ve received messages from many women asking me out on a date, so that they can get to know me better. I have yet to give them an answer or agree to go out with them as I don’t know them well,” he said yesterday.

Nursyafiq, who is the operations chief at the Tebrau Fire and Rescue station, said he had recorded the clip of him singing at his desk as a way of soothing his nerves.

Contrary to his smooth vocals, he claimed to have never sung in public until recently, performing only at home or with his close friends at the station.

“My father told me that recording myself will help me with my nerves when singing in public,” said Nursyafiq.

He said he only took to the stage for the first time during a gala dinner at the department some three years ago.

“The senior officers were asking for those with musical background to perform.

“So, my colleagues invited me to be the singer as they knew that I could sing and they know who my father is,” said Nursyafiq, who had since set up a band – Fire Fingers JDT – with other firemen.

Saleem is the lead singer for the 1990s rock band Iklim, famous for his raspy vocals in the ballad Suci Dalam Debu, Bukan Ku Tak Sudi and Gerhana Cinta Luka.

However, despite the attention he has been receiving lately, there is no doubt of Nursyafiq ever leaving his career as a fireman for the limelight.

“Since I was a boy, I have always wanted to be a fireman to save people’s lives. Singing is just a hobby. I will never swap,” he said.
