MPK officers charged over botched fireworks display

KLANG: A Klang Municipal Council (MPK) department director and another employee have been charged separately in magistrate's courts here over the botched fireworks incident on Jan 1.

MPK Corporate and Social Department director Zaireezal Ahmad Zainuddin and administrative assistant Mohd Nizam Saad were charged separately over the New Year's event that saw 15 people injured by fireworks exploding on the ground at the Pandamaran Sports Complex here.

Mohd Nizam, 33, was charged under Section 337 of the Penal Code for causing hurt by endangering the life or personal safety of others in launching the fireworks.

Zaireezal, 41, was charged as an accomplice, under Section 109 of the Penal Code read together with Section 337, in directing Mohd Nizam to launch the fireworks.

They can be jailed for up to six months, fined RM1,000 or both upon conviction.

Both of them pleaded not guilty.

Mohd Nizam's counsel Ethan Tan requested for a lower bail, saying his client only earns RM1,700 a month and has to provide for his two children.

Magistrate Mariam Maran Abdullah @ Lusia Muda Maran set bail for Mohd Nizam at RM1,500 with a surety and fixed April 20 for mention.

DPP Amira Abd Aziz prosecuted.

Zaireezal's counsel V. Ayasamy also requested for a lower bail, saying his client still works in the council and is not likely to run away.

Magistrate Ahmad Feisal Mohd Azmi set bail at RM2,000 with a surety and fixed April 11 for mention and documents submission.

DPP Aliah Atiqah Razali prosecuted.
