KOTA KINABALU: Police are verifying the case of a nine-year-old girl who fled after being coaxed to enter a van outside a school in Labuan.
Labuan police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said the school management had informed his officers of the incident.
The pupil is said to have been waiting for her parents to fetch her at about 5pm on Wednesday when a white van with tinted windows stopped by.
It is learnt that a passenger opened the window and asked her for her name before offering candies. She declined the offer. Then, another passenger opened the van’s side door.
Upon seeing the van door open, the girl ran back to the school and alerted the security guard. The van then sped off. The guard said he saw three men inside the vehicle.
Teachers later brought the girl to the police station to file a report. It is believed that many pupils also witnessed the incident.
Supt Adzhar said the police were investigating the incident from all angles, including attempted kidnapping.
He advised parents and teachers to advice schoolchildren waiting for their ride home to stay within the school compound.
