Eight hours on, Penang Thaipusam donations still being counted

GEORGE TOWN: Seventy people have begun counting the Thaipusam undial (donations) collected by the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) during the three-day celebrations from Feb 8.

The counting began at 8am Friday (Feb 17) when 41 coffers containing the donations were brought out from the state Finance Department's strongroom on level 23 in Komtar to a room on level five to be counted.

Twenty-nine of the coffers contained donations collected at the Sri Balathandayuthpani Hilltop Murugan Temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga while the remaining 12 contained donations collected during the golden chariot procession.

Pieces of gold jewellery and foreign currency were found in the donation boxes.

Fifty volunteers, assisted by 20 committee members, began counting the donations at about 8.30am.

As at 4pm, the counting is still going on. An appointed valuer will be on called in to weigh and value any precious metals collected while the cash will be deposited in a nearby bank.

Also present are observers and security personnel to witness the counting process.

PHEB chairman Dr P. Ramasamy, executive officer M. Ramachandran and Sri Balathandayuthpani Hilltop Murugan Temple chairman R. Subramaniam were seen checking in on the process.
