Aiming to curb road deaths

KUALA LUMPUR: From roadblocks along highways, spot checks at bus terminals to even Road Transport Department (RTD) officers posing as passengers on buses, the Transport Ministry is deploying more than 1,400 officers ahead of the Chinese New Year rush this time to prevent a repeat of last year’s 279 fatal accidents.

What has jolted the ministry and the relevant authorities even more is that 2016 saw over 7,000 deaths on the road, the highest the country has recorded in the last five years.
